Synopsis
Before Lynda Carter took the heroine back to World War II for her “New, Original” incarnation, statuesque Tennis Pro turned performer Cathy Lee Crosby swung the magic lasso in a very different TV incarnation. As developed by scribe John D.F. Black (Star Trek, Shaft), and seemingly influenced by her recent turn as a mod, cat-suited crime-fighter in the pages of her DC Comics home, this Amazon Princess was more superspy than superhero. But fret not, four-color fans! Many of the expected wondrous elements from bracelets and lassos to Paradise Island and invisible jets, all make an appearance, albeit with a sleek, seventies espionage superaction refit. Ricardo Montalban plays the laconic lothario who lurks at the top of a conspiracy to make off with ultra-secret code books, leading Agent Prince to discover an Amazon sister-in-exile (Anitra Ford).

Most people hate this version because Cathy Lee Crosby was blonde and didn't wear the traditionaly bathing suit costume Wonder Woman is usually depicted in. However, I found this movie to be extremely enjoyable when viewing it after reading the late 60's/early 70's "Mod Diana Prince Era" of the comic books, which is where they seemed to take a lot of influence for this movie.

Crosby isn't Lynda Carter, but she's extremely charming in her own way, and the chemistry between her and Steve Trevor is great. I was tickled by Diana's bantering with villain lackey, George, in the film, especially when she throws some delicious shade at him. I liked that she had a variety of different bracelets that could do different things. Her belt contains a rope that she can pull out and use. We also see a flashback of her leaving Paradise Island to go to Man's World as Wonder Woman, which is well done. This movie actually used non-caucasion Amazons, unlike the Lynda Carter series, which I appreciated. I also enjoyed Diana's reference to her Invisible Plane to explain a "plothole" mystery. I really like the way she uses her brains to get her out of many of her problems. You don't see much of that nowadays...

I also really liked the introduction of the Amazon-gone-bad, who would have been a really interesting re-occuring adversary, had this have gone to series. And Ricardo Montalban is simply charming, even if he is a bad guy.

I'm so glad this was released, and the print doesn't look completely terrible.

As a long-time comic book reader and superhero enthusiast, I'd recommend this only for Wonder Woman completists or curiosity seekers. I'd caught this failed tv pilot back on TV back in the early 80s, so I knew what I was getting into beforehand. The main problem is that the always-beautiful Cathy Lee Crosby is woefully miscast as "D" a.k.a. "Wonder Woman" (although what qualifies her as "Wonder" other than super agility and super kung fu chop, we're not certain). I'm not certain you can appreciate the performance if you've never seen the Lynda Carter series. (And if you've never seen the Lynda Carter series, you have no business watching this instead). All the problems that are corrected in the Lynda Carter series are evident here. It's also a little interesting that this pilot seems more geared toward the CBS super-spy revamp than the original WWII setting that premiered a year or so later. Despite its shortcomings and incredibly convoluted plot, it does benefit from the always-great Ricardo Montalban in full-on Blofeld/pre-Mr. Roarke mode, and former Price is Right Model Anitra Ford is very interesting as a fallen-from-grace Amazon in a very short appearance that seems would've been touched on again if this version had gone to series (in fact, it's the only thing I would've liked to have seen here revisited in the Lynda Carter series). But the WB Archives presentation of this looks great, but again, only recommended for WW completists and those who've heard about this misfire and can take it in stride as a failed attempt at something done much better later on.

This is the one we needed for our collection of Wonder Woman DVD'S. Although those of you who may have not seen this one will recognize the concepts.
This Wonder Woman is more super spy.
This did not do well in the TV ratings goes but it helped to pave the way for Lynda Carter who we all acknowledge as the only Wonder Woman. This is great for collectors Kathy Crosby did a great job this is in no way her fault.

        Comments about Wonder Woman (1974):

I've been waiting for decades for this wonderful TV pilot to be released on DVD. While no one can deny that Lynda Carter was the living, breathing incarnation of the Amazon princess, I've always wished that we could have had a season or two of Cathy Lee Crosby's Wonder Woman first. Cathy Lee's WW is beautiful, resourceful, capable, powerful, charismatic, and even funny. Andrew Prine plays a slimy villain so well that he practically leaves a shiny trail. Kaz Garas makes a dashing Steve Trevor, and Ricardo Montalban is the perfect smooth mastermind. The quality of both the DVD and the packaging is terrific as well. Thanks, Warner Brothers, for making this lifelong Wonder Woman very happy!

                  Comments about Wonder Woman (1974):

Even though major components of the Wonder Woman mythos are missing(trademark costume, super human strength, bullets/bracelets duels)enough elements are there to satisfy a comic book aficionado like me(paradise island, steve trevor, amazons, lasso, and mention of the invisible jet). More spy fare than super hero epic, this is an interesting alternate take on a classic super hero.
