Synopsis
An all-star cast headlines this witty mystery-thriller about a movie producer who invites six friends to a cruise aboard his yacht, the "Sheila," named after his late wife who died in an unsolved hit-and-run accident a year ago that day. As the ship sets sail, those aboard begin to realize that their host has more than innocent parlor games in mind as he pits each against the other, taunting them with the knowledge that his wife's killer is among them. Written by Oscar- and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer and lyricist -- and puzzle-fanatic -- Stephen Sondheim ("Dick Tracy, " "West Side Story") and actor-writer Anthony Perkins ("Psycho"). Directed by Oscar-nominee Herbert Ross ("Boys on the Side," "Steel Magnolias"), and starring Raquel Welch ("Naked Gun 33 1/3), Oscar-winner James Coburn ("Maverick"), Richard Benjamin ("Goodbye, Columbus"), and Academy Award-nominees Dyan Cannon ("Heaven Can Wait"), Joan Hackett ("Only When I Laugh") and James Mason ("The Verdict").

Comments about Last of Sheila, The (1973):

I saw THE LAST OF SHEILA on the "Late-Late Show" on TV when I was a kid and I really enjoyed it. When I found out it was available on DVD here, I had to add it to my collection.

The premise is that a group of friends who all work in the entertainment industry (played by a stellar cast of well-known actors including James Coburn, Richard Benjamin, Dyan Cannon, Joan Hackett, James Mason, Ian McShane and Raquel Welch -- back then) get inivited on board a yacht for a week of games. But these games have a sinister twist and it ends in murder!

That's really a simplified synopsis of the plot, as it's a wonderful twist and turn of a movie; and just when you think you've figured things out, you get sidelined by another revelation.

The movie plays out in real time and then in flashback sequences, so everything is explained in the end.

Although the film could stand to be digitally restored, as is the visual quality is good: colors are good, dust, noise, and artifacts are to a minimum, and image is sharp.

There's two bonus features that include a 2:55 - minute trailer and audio commentary by three of the stars Richard Benjamin, Dyan Cannon and Raquel Welch.

If you enjoy mysteries and you haven't seen this movie, get it! Another interesting point is this movie was written by Anthony Perkins of Psycho fame, and composer/song-writer Stephen Sondheim.
