The first time I viewed this movie, it made an impression on me. For years, I have searched for a copy of it, but somehow never found one until now. I was delighted to find it. Jean Simmons was wonderful in this role.

This film has lingered in memory and haunted me since I saw it in late fifties. After years of catching occasional showings of poor prints on TV, it is wonderful to have this clear crisp remaster. A truly intelligent script, fine direction, and the performance of a lifetime from Jean Simmons raise what might have been a soapy melodrama to a truly great film. This story of a beleaguered and self-deceived housewife resonates far beyond its proto-feminist, Doll's House, Cinderella plot line to resonate with anyone (woman or man) who has yearned for the love of those close to them and bought into self-destructive stories about who and what they should be to earn that love. This film is one for the ages!!

This long-neglected melodrama is an amazingly insightful portrait of marriage, especially the way that it depends upon deceit. The husband's manipulation of the wife may recall Gaslight, but what is achieved here is more realistic. Although the plot devices may seem extreme, they work well in describing the lengths to which men go to dominate and deceive women.

The remastered edition of "Home Before Dark" does not disappoint: Black levels were rich, details are nice a crisp, and even the audio track clean. WB Archive did a nice job!
Now we really can enjoy J.Simmons Great Performance with this good print!

This is my favorite movie. It is the emotional story of a woman bringing herself back from a nervous breakdown The characters and actors do a fantastic job. Jean Simmons is especially good. The characters are well drawn and you get very involved with them. When it is over, you feel empowered and happy because the Jean Simmons character takes control of her life and you know her future will be bright. Highly recommend.

Jean Simmons is excellent here, delivering a take on the bourgeoise nervous breakdown that is both honest and believable. The film explores middle-class hypocrisy with a heavy hand but Simmons brings a sensitivity to her character that grounds the picture and the melodrama; Mervyn LeRoy directs with skill.
The monochrome print has density and crispness, and the monaural sound is solid, justifying the remastered moniker.
