Synopsis
If you were a famed mystery playwright with a devastating string of recent flops, what would you do for a can't-miss thriller script? Beg for it? Pay for it? Or would you kill for it? You would if you were Sidney Bruhl, the leading character in Ira Levin's dazzlingly funny, deliciously scary, Broadway-smash-turned-movie-hit Deathtrap. Michael Caine starts as Bruhl and Christopher Reeve stars as Bruhl's one-time student, who's written a play so flawless "even a gifted director couldn't ruin it" ...and who requests Bruhl's production help. And Dyan Cannon is Bruhl's loving wife, who doesn't want the student helped to an early grave. Sydney Lumet directs Deathtrap's hairpin twists with such drop-dead wit and delightful dread that you'll stop laughing only long enough to gasp in surprise.

        Comments about Deathtrap (BD):

The transfer widescreen all right looks great!
The print is quite good, but there are some white specks, however very good contrast, sharp 'image' and the audio track is clear and clean.
This is a quite good Blu-ray edition.

        Comments about Deathtrap (BD):

Finally great to see Deathtrap in widescreen and with a beautiful presentation. The movie was even better than I remembered it. Sadly, there are no extras with this film. I'm not surprised, since this is an "Archive" edition, but a movie this classic should be honored with interviews and a commentary.

This isn't a review of the movie. The only reviews on this site are from those who like the movie they're reviewing, anyway.

No, this is simply to tell interested buyers that unlike the bare-bones old DVD, this IS, in fact, presented in its correct 1.85 to 1 aspect ratio, and is NOT FULLSCREEN as the technical information elsewhere on this page claims. No bells or whistles, as befits the Archive Collection, though.
          That's all.
(It IS, incidentally, a great movie.)

              Comments about Deathtrap (BD):

"Deathtrap" was an obvious attempt to duplicate the success of "Sleuth", a play and movie that was also about two men playing deadly cat-and-mouse games in a country home filled with bizarre objects. "Deathtrap" was hugely successful on Broadway, but this movie version failed to duplicate that success. By piling on the twists and surprises, playwright Ira Levin and screenwriter Jay Presson Allen created numerous plot holes and lapses in logic. Also, Allen created a new and unsatisfying ending for the movie.

Despite all these problems, the movie actually plays well the first time you watch it. It's only during repeat viewings that the plot begins to unravel. The movie is basically a satire, and the wonderfully witty dialogue carries you along through the sloppy bits. The actors are all excellent (although Dyan Cannon has been criticized for going "over the top"---you can judge that for yourself). Sidney Lumet's direction is masterful: 95% of the movie takes place in a single setting, yet it never becomes tedious.

This Blu-ray is big upgrade from the 1999 DVD that was "modified to fit your TV". The widescreen image is sharp, the colors are rich and the audio is crisp. There are 38 chapters (a bit of an overkill), but there is no chapter menu. On the other hand, there are (gasp!) subtitles which can help you cut through Caine's accent. I hope this is a new trend for for the Warner Archive.

How about "Dolores Claiborne," "Hairspray (1988)," "My Favorite Year," "Mildred Pierce," "Hedwig and the Angry Inch," "The Women," or "Stage Door" for a future BD release?
