Synopsis
Edna Ferber’s classic tale of life and love among a theatrical troupe on a Mississippi riverboat has received many dramatic treatments since its birth over eighty years ago. But none is more satisfying than this 1936 production, widely accepted as the best and most faithful of three screen versions of the Jerome Kern-Oscar Hammerstein II musical. A splendid, indeed definitive cast features Irene Dunne as the lovely Magnolia, fated to fall for Allan Jones’ dashing riverboat gambler, Gaylord Ravenal. It is their turbulent romance and Magnolia’s growth from a shy guileless girl to a mature star of the stage that form the core of the story. In her last film appearance, Helen Morgan will break your heart as the tragic Julie, with her songs “Bill” and “Can’t Help Lovin’ That Man.” And there is perhaps no more memorable performance in musical history than Paul Robeson’s moving rendition of “Ol’ Man River.”

      Comments about Show Boat (1936):

Show Boat deserves a Blu Ray release with commentary and numerous
extras detailing its background from book to play to film. The biographies
of its remarkable cast, director are deserving of not only recognition, but
their ( Paul Robson ) significance and place in the American cinema and
theatre. Do the "right thing" Warner Bros to this great American cinema
      classic.

      Comments about Show Boat (1936):

Once again great stuff from Warners! And thanks to their now great idea of doing the first run in pressed discs on some titles they got my money back! Not one wasted frame in this classic film by James Whale. Every performer is spot on. The two things that should have been done was include the films trailer and also the radio broadcast of the film that Warners had on their podcast. C'mon TCM how about doing a documentary on the making of this film and how it brought down Universal Pictures top brass and the putting of the film in MGM's vaults until the 1980's would be great stuff too. Now all we need is the Bowery Boys Vol 4, some more Forbidden Hollywood sets and a pressed disc release of Dennis Morgan's "The Desert Song!" Bravo and thank you again!

        Comments about Show Boat (1936):

This is the best version of the film While the
1951 versiion had Ava Gardner it also had Kathryn
Grayson, one of the horrors of the 1950s along with the Korean War and the McCarthy witch hunts. Worth having just for "Can't Help Lovin That Man" and for Helen Morgan's touching "Bill". Thanks a million

          Comments about Show Boat (1936):

I am so excited this has finally come out on DVD! It's a must see for any fan of musicals. SHOWBOAT was the first musical to change the face of the musical theatre, with a serious, yet funny at times solid story , instead of just a collection of musical numbers, and THIS is the BEST filmed version, ever!. Based on the novel by Edna Farber, this movie, directed by James Whale (Best known for the first two classic Universal Frankenstein films, and the Invisible Man) is worth seeing alone, for just the magnificent rendering of "Ol' Man River" by Paul Robeson - but there's so much more! For years, the only American release of this classic was on Criterion laserdisc (which I have) , but now it's available for everyone on DVD! Grab a copy- you won't regret it!

            Comments about Show Boat (1936):

Short of the Frederica von Stade version of Showboat on CD, this is the most perfectly cast with the closest to perfection voices doing the Kern classic songs. From Irene Dunne's fantastic soprano to Paul Robeson's bass, this is hands down the best version. Thank you for putting this on DvD. I was wearing out my laser disc version of it.
