Synopsis
Film icon Peter Lorre turns in yet another memorable performance in this eerie classic set in a small town in Italy. Hilary Cummins (Lorre), the devoted secretary to wheelchair-bound piano virtuoso Francis Ingram (Victor Francen), has a passion for the occult. Poring through every book on the supernatural he can find in Ingram’s vast library, Hilary begins to imagine strange and terrifying things. But after Ingram’s tragic death, the line between reality and unimaginable terror is blurred as the severed hand from Ingram’s corpse begins killing everyone in the villa! Also starring Robert Alda and Andrea King, The Beast with Five Fingers is filled with wit, thrills and shocking plot twists!

Beast With Five Fingers is a must-have move for anyone who is a fan or collector of horror movies or thrillers. Although this movie does not contain explicit gore as many new movies do, Beast With Five Fingers is a great reference movie for engaging the viewer for every minute of the story. Of course, if you are a fan of Peter Lorre as I am, you will find this movie to be one of the best he has ever starred in. In the early Warner Brother's Bugs Bunny cartoons, there was a recurring mad doctor character that was based on Peter Lorre's character in Beast With Five Fingers, and for that reference, you should watch this movie.

I remember this movie from 30 years ago (on the tv). My kids were terrified of "the hand"! I didn't remember that it was quite so slow to get into the scary stuff, but then it was pretty creepy. Great cast!

      "THE DEVIL'S HAND"

This DVD looked great: Image and Sound are quite good regarding the age of the "film".
This is a good example of WB Archive Film, good contrast, relatively sharp image, and decent black level.
Nevertheless a lot of white specks, a few bad frames and some minor issue with the audio track from time to time.

      HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

More Petery goodness from Warner Archive

Very good of you to give us a nice DVD version of this. It's seemed to me that for many years films like this in which Peter Lorre is the featured star remained unavailable on home video because the copyright holders simply had no idea how to market them, just as the studios struggled with how to market this impossible-to-categorize actor.

      Lorre steals it

BEAST starts as a fairly mundane film in the style of a typical WB 2nd feature from the era. But as the movies builds up, it becomes an excellent psychological horror tale, with Peter Lorre stealing the show in one of his best performances. Able support comes from Victor Francen and the always enjoyable J. Carroll Naish. Robert Florey(the director) always contended that he could have made a better FRANKENSTEIN than James Whale(Florey was the original choice for director). Judging from this film, and his other horror pictures, Florey was mistaken. But, with the right cast, he was capable of creating well made thrillers. And this one may be his best.

Peter Lorre was an actor blessed with a special skill at depicting mental turmoil, and his performance here is a triumph. Art direction, photography and music also excel at creating a creepy atmosphere. The wrap-up is lack-luster, but Lorre's descent into madness will prove impossible to forget.
