Synopsis
Audacious, controversial and shockingly frank, Forbidden Hollywood: Volume Six turns the spotlight on adultery, alcoholism, prostitution and racism, issues the Production Code would soon ban from the screen. Starring the pre-Code era’s biggest stars, including John Gilbert, Richard Barthelmess, Myrna Loy, Kay Francis and Ann Dvorak, these four rarely seen gems are a provocative reflection of American mores in a not-so-innocent time. The Wet Parade (1932): Demon whiskey brings ruin to two families in this all-star adaptation of Upton Sinclair’s impassioned novel. Downstairs (1932): A philandering chauffeur (Gilbert) creates havoc in an upper-class household. Mandalay (1934): A Russian refugee (Francis) seeks revenge upon the ex-lover (Ricardo Cortez) who sold her into lavery. Massacre (1934): A college-educated Sioux (Barthelmess) wreaks vengeance upon the white officials who abused his family and cheated his people.

Comments about Forbidden Hollywood Collection: Volume 6:

          Disc 1: The Wet Parade

The print is not so bad, still there are lots of white specks, a few bad frames, with some softness, and scratches.
However quite good contrast, relatively sharp, and good black.
The audio track is just " little noisy" from time to time..
          Watchable print.

          Disc 2: Downstairs

The print is quite good, but there are lots of white specks, a few bad frames, and the audio track is" very noisy" but clear enough.
However decent contrast, relatively sharp 'image', and quite good black.
          Very watchable print.

          Disc 3: Mandalay

The print comes with speckles, marks, a few bad frames. However decent contrast, sharp 'image', and quite good black considering the age of the film. The audio track is clear.
          Watchable print.

          Disc 4: Massacre

The print has its share of specs, marks and scratches, a few bad frames, some white spots and vertical lines however the contrast is good and the black is decent.
Also the audio track is "little noisy" but still clear enough.
          Watchable print

          HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

PS: All four discs are pressed DVDs and not made-on-demand discs

Comments about Forbidden Hollywood Collection: Volume 6:

I am thrilled that Warner is putting some product on pressed disc! I bought both Bowery Boys sets and previous Forbidden Hollywood sets I bought Vol 7 immediately for "The Hatchet Man" alone and held off on Vol 6. Then I e-mailed Warner Customer service and explained I wanted to buy Vol 6 but would only if it was still the first pressing and still pressed discs. Thank you Warner Customer Service for taking the time to check and get back to me and confirming it was the first pressing. I ordered the set and the set is indeed pressed and another winner from Warners!

Thank you for going the extra mile!

Comments about Forbidden Hollywood Collection: Volume 6:

The myth that John Gilbert was destroyed by the talkies is blown away in "Downstairs". He gets credit for the story, and is deliciously manipulative as the chauffer with something extra. The other films on the dvd have their moments, but John Gilbert and "Downstairs" are the sole reason for the five stars. The other films get two to three stars apiece. Forbidden Holllywood volume 7 does better.
